// Confirmed Update — Spam
June 2026 Google Spam Update

The June 2026 spam update is the most recent confirmed Google algorithm action on the board. It was the second spam update of 2026, following the record-fast March 2026 spam update, and it rolled out globally across all languages in roughly two days.

Start: June 24, 2026 — 9:00 AM PDT
Completed: June 26, 2026
Duration: ~2 days
Type: Spam update (SpamBrain)
Scope: Global — all languages, all regions
New policies: None announced

What It Targeted

Google characterized this as a routine spam update and published no companion blog post or new spam policies. Spam updates are improvements to Google’s automated spam-detection systems — principally SpamBrain, its AI-based spam prevention and enforcement system. In practice, a spam update means SpamBrain’s parameters were retuned to catch newer or evolving forms of spam, enforcing existing policy harder rather than introducing new rules.

What It Explicitly Did Not Target

This is the detail most coverage buried, and it matters for diagnosis. Google confirmed the June 2026 spam update does not target link spam and does not target the site reputation abuse policy. If your rankings moved during this window and your working theory is a link-based or parasite-SEO cause, this update is very likely the wrong culprit — keep diagnosing.

Spam Update vs. Core Update

These are different failure modes and demand different responses:

  • Spam update: An enforcement event. Your site was judged to violate spam policy. Recovery requires removing the violating behavior, then waiting for a subsequent spam update to re-evaluate.
  • Core update: A relevance and quality reassessment. No policy violation is implied. Recovery is about demonstrably improving content quality and E-E-A-T, and can surface at the next core update.

Recovery Timeline

Sites hit by a spam update should expect recovery on a scale of weeks to months, not days. Enforcement is re-evaluated when SpamBrain systems next run — which typically means waiting for the next spam update. There is no expedited path and no reconsideration request for algorithmic spam actions (unlike manual actions, which do have a reconsideration process in Search Console).

What To Do Now

  • Confirm the timing actually matches. Compare your baseline before June 24 against performance after June 26 — not against a window that overlaps the rollout.
  • Rule out link spam and site-reputation abuse as causes, since Google confirmed neither was targeted here.
  • Audit for scaled low-value content, thin affiliate pages, and content produced primarily for search engines rather than people.
  • Check Search Console for manual actions separately — an algorithmic spam update and a manual action are not the same thing.
